Since 2020, Phuthuma Nathi has run an annual national campaign to help shareholders claim outstanding dividends. These efforts have enabled the payment of more than R124 million in dividends, yet over R250 million still remains unclaimed.
Industry experts note that unclaimed dividends are a recurring issue in South Africa's financial sector. Many shareholders move without updating their contact details, change banking information, or pass away without their families being aware of the entitlement. This has left large sums uncollected across various empowerment and investment schemes.
Track record of value
Since its launch in 2006, Phuthuma Nathi has paid out more than R19.2 billion in dividends. Its wide-ranging shareholder base includes domestic helpers, stokvel groups, small businesses, and professionals, making it one of the country's most far-reaching B-BBEE schemes. Phuthuma Nathi is committed to finding every shareholder who is owed money and paying what is rightfully theirs.
How to claim
Unclaimed dividends are administered by Phuthuma Nathi's transfer secretary, Singular Systems. Shareholders or family members of deceased investors need to complete a FICA verification process, which involves providing:
- Proof of identity
- An up-to-date bank statement or confirmation letter
- Proof of address
Once verified, dividends are typically paid within three to five working days.
Although the process may sometimes seem cumbersome, it is essential to ensure that funds are paid both accurately and securely.
Analysts argue that awareness campaigns like this are critical to ensuring empowerment schemes deliver on their promises. Money left unclaimed represents missed opportunities for households and communities, particularly in a tough economic climate.
